Lawrence Azerrad - Elvis to Voyager and everything in between
To chat with Lawrence Azerrad for a podcast about design is like entering the world of a master. As Lawrence so succinctly explains at the beginning of our discussion, his love of designer is how others feel about music - it's their life and passion. And lucky for us that Lawrence found his calling from Chicago to Los Angeles, with one of his lecturers giving him the contact to head into Warner Brothers Records for a job and the rest, as they say, is history.
Throughout our discussion we cover Lawrence's early history of discovering he had a knack for art, right through to current times working with long-time collaborators Wilco and Silversun Pickups. What you quickly find is that the stories are just as intriguing as the art itself. Whether it be Anthony Kiedis relaying a dream John Frusciante had - that became the cover for Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication to being a young designer with Elvis Costello on the phone giving long distance (in a conversation I would have crumbled having) or working on the Voyager Golden Record 40th Anniversary vinyl package.
If you are a fan of The Beach Boys, Foo Fighters, You Am I or any of the acts mentioned above, this is the podcast you need to listen to.
And moving outside of music, Lawrence has expanded his love for design to arguably the most stunning aircraft ever designer, The Concorde.
